Kings pin hopes on Van Breda

THE Southern Kings sprang a major surprise when they decided that the largely untested utility back, Scott van Breda, would be their No 1 goal-kicker in their “make-or-break” Super Rugby relegation showdown against the Lions in Johannesburg on Saturday. After Elton Jantjies won round one in the battle of the boot for the Lions last week, the 21-year-old Van Breda has been entrusted to winning round two for the Southern Kings at Ellis Park. Regular first choice flyhalf Demetri Catrakilis was ruled out by a shoulder injury and George Whitehead was yesterday named as his replacement for the vital second leg. It had been thought that Whitehead would also be the No 1 goal-kicker, but Kings director of rugby Alan Solomons said that duty would go to Van Breda. The in-form Jantjies booted 16 points in his team’s 26-19 win last week and he is looming large as a major threat to the Kings’ hopes at Ellis Park.
